Crisis communication is a particular specialization within the field of communication. A crisis is the moment where communication can make a difference. Research into this specialty is being conducted worldwide and it is important that these insights are shared with communication professionals in practice.
In collaboration with the Crisis Communication Think Tank (CCTT) will the Center for Strategic Communication (CSC) host a webinar on crisis communication. The webinar will begin with a spoken column by Wouter Jong, who will provide a general introduction to crisis communication.
Professor Dr. Yan Jin (professor at the University of Georgia, co-founder and director of the Crisis Communication Think Tank, and associate director of the Center for Health and Risk Communication) will share her knowledge and tips on crisis communication. .
Matthew O'Connor works at UPS where he is responsible for issue management and crisis communication. He is a founding practitioner member of the CCTT. During the webinar, Matthew will share the foundational elements of crisis communication as well as social and technological challenges.
Christian Burgers will reflect on the presentations from the Dutch point of view. Celia Noordegraaf will be the moderator of the webinar.

Celia Noordegraaf
Celia Noordegraaf was als bestuurslid van Logeion verantwoordelijk voor de portefeuille Wetenschap en Professionalisering. In het dagelijks leven is zij interim communicatiemanager. Samen met Logeion-hoogleraar Christian Burgers jaagt zij de verbinding tussen wetenschap en praktijk aan vanuit het Centrum voor Strategische Communicatie (CSC) en modereert hiervoor veel bijeenkomsten.
Christian Burgers
Christian Burgers is sinds 1 maart 2019 bijzonder hoogleraar Strategische Communicatie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij bekleedt de zogenaamde Logeion-leerstoel. Daarnaast is hij hoogleraar Communication and Organisations aan dezelfde universiteit. Zijn onderzoek richt zich onder meer op overtuiging en betekenisgeving van maatschappelijke issues via communicatie en taal. Hij heeft verschillende onderzoeksbeurzen verworven, waaronder een Veni-beurs en een Vidi-beurs van NWO. Tijdens CSC-bijeenkomsten reflecteert hij vanuit zijn rol als hoogleraar Strategische Communicatie op de uitkomsten van de discussie.
Matthew O'Connor
Matthew O’Connor is responsible for issues management and crisis communications at UPS, the global transportation and logistics company with 530,000 employees who serve customers in more than 220 countries and territories. Matthew specializes in reputation management for areas that include labor and working conditions, network operations and service performance, and the impact of innovation and technology. He joined UPS in 2014 to manage public relations with various industry segments and has led its U.S. team of local market communications professionals.
Matthew previously led public relations for Triumph Motorcycles’ U.S. restructuring and rebranding, managed corporate communications for NASCAR during its growth into a national lifestyle brand, and represented a variety of B2B and B2C clients at small, medium, and large agencies.
Wouter Jong
Wouter Jong promoveerde in 2019 aan de Universiteit van Tilburg op leiderschap van burgemeesters tijdens crises. Hij is adviseur op het gebied van crisisbeheersing en crisis communicatie. Namens VNG International is hij betrokken bij rampenbestrijdingsprojecten op Sint Maarten en in het Midden-Oosten. Sinds 2018 geeft hij het vak Crisis Communication bij het Institute of Security and Global Affairs aan de Universiteit Leiden. Daarnaast is Wouter lid van de vakgroep crisiscommunicatie en issues management van Logeion.
Yan Jin
Professor Dr. Yan Jin teaches undergraduate Public Relations (PR), PR Research, PR Administration, AdPR Health, Crisis Communication, and PR Campaigns courses at the University of Georgia. She also teaches doctoral-level mass communication theory course. As a public relations scholar, Professor Dr. Jin’s primary research programs are in the areas of crisis communication, strategic conflict management, and health risk communication, focusing on the role of emotions and social media in crisis and risk communication theory and application.
